Is your natural hair straight or curly? If you've got naturally curly hair, you've probably had it straightened at one point or another, and if you've got straight hair, we're betting you've tried your share of styling products to make it curly. A study by Frontiers in Psychology suggests that “straight hair is perceived as younger, healthier, and more attractive than wavy hair.” On the other hand, there's a certain freedom to curls, isn't there? However you like your locks, the great thing about hair is its versatility, and we're here to help you get the look you want. If you're looking to make your straight hair a little bit curly, here’s how to do it the right way.
Hot Treatments are NOT the Answer
Heat styling tools can spark an unwanted chemical reaction in your hair and even change the shape of its keratin strands, which can lead to heat damage, dry hair, split ends, and dullness. Perms and hot oil treatments can even lead to a loss in volume. No matter how much you want to turn your straight hair curly, don't reach for the curling iron. If this has been your go-to solution for curls in the past, the first thing you'll want to do is nurture your mane back to health with Lu's Rescue Collection. Hot tools (including a flat iron or blow dryer) can dry out your strands and cause your hair a lot of stress. Rescue is made with moisturizing shatavari and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants and vitamins that revive hair visibly and naturally, restoring it back to its best. When your straight hair is healthy once again, you can get to work on achieving curls without heat.

1. Pin Curls
Pin curls are an easy way to add curls to your straight hair without damaging it with heat. First, wash your hair with Lu’s Freedom Shampoo. Next, scrunch one or two quarter-sized gobs of Lu’s Freedom Conditioner. Wash it out, dry your hair with a microfiber towel and apply the Free To Be Styling Cream to define curls and waves while it’s still damp. Then, divide your hair into one-inch sections. Wrap a section around your finger twice, slip your finger out and roll your hair up to your scalp to create a spiral like a cinnamon bun. Be careful not to twist it as you go to avoid frizz, and pin it in place. Repeat across your hair, let your wet hair dry, and then remove the pins to release your new curls on the world.
2. An Old T-Shirt
Start your preparation by grabbing an old t-shirt and cutting it into strips from top to bottom. Thinner strips make for tighter curls later on, so cut your strips carefully. With your strips cut, begin with your regular shower routine. Take a section of your hair and roll a strip with your hair into it and up to your scalp. At the top, tie the end to keep it in place. Repeat across your hair, then let your hair dry and remove the strips for maximum curl.
3. A Bun
Just like the other techniques, this one starts with damp hair. Detangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb and pull it back into a ponytail at the top of your head. Apply Lu’s Intense Therapy Leave-In Cream to your damp hair, scrunching it into the hair beginning at the tips and working your way down to (but not touching) the scalp. This step adds moisture, long-lasting shine and softness to every strand. Wrap the ponytail around three times to create a bun on top of your head. Or, you can make two buns for tighter curls. Then, sleep on it - literally. For the best curls, you’ll need to let it dry overnight. In the morning, you’ll wake up with a curlier perspective on life when you remove the buns carefully. B
4. A Heatless Roller
Rollers have been around in one way or another for the best part of a century, but we only recommend using the velcro type. This is another post-shower technique that begins after you apply the Lock the Look Styling Styling Cream from Lu’s Control Collection, which will keep the frizz away once you’re done rolling. Section your hair and start to roll, using extra pins to keep seriously straight hair in place. Flip your hair and remove the rollers carefully to let the waves loose. Prolonged use of velcro rollers can cause tangled hair, so we don’t recommend rolling all that time.
5. A Headband
Our final recommendation is the trusty headband, as long as it doesn’t cause too much friction on your scalp. Pull the headband over your head. Your curls will start where the headband sits, which makes placement super important. Now, take a small section of your hair from in front of the headband and wrap it carefully around. Keep looping until all of the hair is tucked nicely around the headband to make a crown. For best results, let your hair dry in the headband and remove the headband carefully to release your new look.
